Dubai 1981. E.T.P.M. pipelay barge 203. All the welders were Lebanese. They were doing, like, a year at a time, to dodge the draft that was on back home. Consequently, they were loaded.

There was one little chap who looked like one of the Marx brothers, who welded pipe in a gold Rolex. It was spattered with weld.

(They were available then in Dubai for about 3-3.5K GBP.)

When asked, why was he welding in a gold Rolex? He would reply, 'Because I don't like to wear my best one'

And it was true. He had taken one down to the gold souk, and had one especially made, encrusted with diamonds around the bezel.

I wish I had made the investment....
