heating my jacket

Lying in bed watching the rain so I thought I'd start a thread on electric warmth for the winter. Resistors (easily available from maplins, Ebay etc) become warm in use. I'm making a heater at the moment to go in the bottom of my ferrets sleeping box. For this I've bought five x 3 watt, 300 ohm wirewound vitreous enamel resistors. Amazingly these have a working temperature of up to 350 C. Wired in parallell and running at 12 volts these resistors will generate 2.4 watts of heat. 300/5=60.12/60=0.2.12x0.2=2.4. The box for the heater is three inches square with a lid of sheet brass to help dissipate the heat. The cable runs straight up into the base of the heater through the hutch floor to which the heater is bolted. This is the third heater that I've made for them. I think that 2.4 Watts is about right as it's going to be well insulated with woollen blanket and Ferret. I made a 10 watt heater last winter that went into the front of my bike jacket. After two miles it was like sitting in front of a roaring fire. Regards. Bob.
