Now that is an interesting idea, brass, so no rust. The nuts I used were from a cheapo nut,bolt,washer set of various sizes I bought just so I wouldn't get caught short some time but I wouldn't use them for 'mission critical' high stress job. Probably mild steel. They feel like a good sneeze would split them. My thinking was make them the weak point rather than the exhaust studs. They will probably disintegrate and fall off by themselves just about the time the exhaust needs replaced
