Yes it is, and it would have been perfectly correct to use it there. But there is also nothing wrong with 'for ever' which gives a slightly different shade of meaning, by putting a little more emphasis on the 'ever', which is what I wanted to do. Chambers' dictionary uses 'for ever' as a definition of 'forever' so it's at least arguable! But don't assume that I never make a mistake, 'cos I do.
