There's a good motorail service from Dusseldorf to Villach on the Austrian/Croatia border then an adjoining service through to Edirne in Turkey that goes straight through Bulgaria.
However......... it looks like a direct service type deal so no getting off the train 'till it reaches Turkey, you would then have to backtrack 700 miles across the length of Bulgaria to reach Lom.
Still it's got to be more interesting than French motorways and German autobahn's.
