I agree that the non functioning airbox could cause the flat spot. However could you check that the accelerator plunger on the carb has not lost it's spring. It's the small vertical pin with a white plastic top on the front right of the carb. and if you depress it, it should pop up again. The spring is easily lost when cleaning the fuel bowl.
