You're right, Ady, I had this problem constantly on my two CD175s back in the 70s. Every 8,000 miles or so without fail they developed a mid-range misfire which was only cured with a new needle and needle jet. I used to try dropping the needle one notch but it didn't really work. I have a collection of about a dozen old needles and jets to this day. In those days they cost about £2; now I think it's nearer £20 a time!
