I think people don't ride down together cause they set off at such different times. The first time I went there were 4 or 5 of us rode together, but every year since nobody has been setting off the same time as me.
Not sure about 'cliques'. never seen any evidence of that. there are 50-60 people there last few years so it'd be hard to hang out in one bunch!
