No spark

I have two Honda 90's a 1975 and a 1970 (with a 1981 engine in it). I parked them about a year ago after turning off the fuel and running the carbs dry. Last week I tried to start them up. I replaced the spark plugs, the gas was bad, so I drained and replaced it, and I may still need to do a quick carb cleaning, however my problem is no spark! Both the batteries were dead as doornails and won't take a charge. I've ordered a couple new batteries. I've run them before on dead batteries, usually as long as they are present the bike will run. Do the capacitors go bad? Or is it because of the poor battey conditon, or something else. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
