Leiba, I think I may have posted this elsewhere. I would certainly loosen the lower nuts, if just to give a bit of play for the top mounting to come off. But if I were doing it I would put the bike on its centre stand, then block up the back wheel with a brick or something so that it can't fall when you remove the suspension top mounts. Then you can do both sides at once which will make it much easier to position the rack on the top studs.
