I worked on the opposite principal for the trip from the ferry, I pinned the 24mm carb wide open and let the 125 big valve fill it's boots up.

It did get me the 80 home in under 2 hours with a 20 min fuel stop and a 2 mile tailback at the Dartford tunnel.
