These photos tell my story of a wet weekend in September 2011 when I took part in a Honda C90 (and similar motorcycles), ride out to the Lake District and beyond.
As we were all from different parts of the country, we Met up opposite from Ye Old Naked Man Cafe in Settle. This allowed us time to have a snack and compare bike headlights, Boo being the overall winner overshadowing Harry's Pifco tiddler. Boo didn't come with us, but just came along to say hello and wish us well. As we rode off out of Settle, Diddly turned a corner and spotted us going down the road. He'd been held up in traffic but luckily caught us up and tagged on to our merry bunch.
The roads were wet and greasy and we all had to be extra careful as we cornered the bends of the Whinlatter Pass. Then suddenly, it happened, Vic ran over what could only have been an oil slick and in the blink of an eye was off. The damage to his bike was minor and comprised a snapped brake lever and scratches on his wind shield.
On arrival at our luxury campsite at The Lowther Arms in Mawbray, I remember having great difficulty erecting my tent. The wind was getting up and I seemed to be the last one to set up camp before we retired to the pub for the night. The food was excellent and thanks to JJ's Uncle's asthma testing pipe, we were all relieved that everyone in the group was in the rudest of health.
The next morning after a good refreshing sleep despite the rain and howling winds, we assembled in the pub and had coffee and toast followed by a photo shoot outside the pub. BCP and JJ re-enacting their second world war prison camp photo you've probably seen in the past.
We set off down the coast road stopping for nothing but petrol and after no time at all (about 3 hours on a C90), we were deep in the Lake District. The scenery was delightful and the occasional break in the rain was a bonus for stopping to admire one of the many lakes and having a pee. At one such lake though, Pete was horrified when his toilet activity resulted in the appearance of 2 skin divers ( no, it's not the fourskin divers joke). All ended well however and as you will see, they joined us for a group picture.
After that, there was the little matter of the Hardknott Pass to overcome. A notorious road with its sharp steep bends that made driving or riding it somewhat of a challenge. This beautiful part of the country was also where, in the 2nd century, Hadrian founded a Roman Fort and we couldn't pass by without a tour of this impressive archeological treasure. Even little Annie was excited to stretch her legs and as I watched Bogger emerging from the ruins of the Fort, my imagination got the better of me. It struck me that he bore all the accolades of a noble Roman Soldier. I just hope he doesn't strike me when he sees picture 42.
Up and up we then rode, twisting one way then the other. Through the heavy Lake District rain. One final stop for petrol at the Shell station on the A591 then we went our separate ways happy after a fun weekend.
Those in attendance: Wigan Bob, Klippy & Little Annie, Bogger, Black Country Pete, JJ, Harry, Diddley, Vic and myself.
