Can only speak for English bikes. The standard thickness for most of them in my day was 7/8" diameter, though some of the very early ones were 1". I seem to remember that Triumph were different from others by a small amount. The few Jap bikes I have had were presumably metric, but 7/8" items seemed to fit.
