Mojo and fully auto's

I lost my mechanical mojo a while ago and have done little more than bike related than ride back and forth to work on my Jincheng Chaly hybrid thingy. But tonight I felt the urge to drag Cheri's genuine Honda Chaly out of the garage and take it for a spin....mojo has returned. Cheri's Chaly (called Tigger) is a later 12V 3 speed fully auto CF70 version. The first thing most people do with a fully auto, is take it out and replace it with a Cub90 engine, but for me they are something special. They aren't just some modern variomatic, they actually have 3 gears that change automatically..it's brilliant. There are a lot of urban myths about these engine/gearboxes, but as an owner and tuner, I would say ignore most of it. Unfortunately something you can't ignore is that the aprts for these gearboxes and the complicated clutch are discontinued, so look after them. Treated well they can last a long time though. Tigger has covered 20,000 miles and is still going strong on the original gearbox and clutch assembly. Getting more power from these engines is not all that easy, but it can be done. The masin problem is that the crankshaft is unique to the fully auto's which were only made in 49 and 72cc capacity. So stroking them to Cub90 capacity would require a custom crank being built. However there is another way, Tigger has a 52mm bore with a total capacity of 88cc, this coupled with a early big valve C70 head and suitable carb and manifold gives a performance not far off that of a Cub90. happy Tinkering all.
