been down to the alps a couple of times, but I went via Hull/Rotterdam. A lovely way to travel is on the Main roads that go alongside the major rivers, the danube/rhine etc in Germany.
The Autobahns are just plain dangerous on the c90. Had to resort to them a couple of times.
get a large european map to show you the rough layout of the route initially, then get busy on Google.
