As per the previous posting on this subject I was determined to go out for a ride on New Years Eve, come what may with regards to the weather. As I looked out of the bedroom window at 8.00 am It didn't look good. Blustery heavily overcast and raining . I was still going anyway . By the time I got the Cub out of the garage the rain had stopped but it was still grim. I know some of you are probably a bit shocked about me going on a Cub ride out on a Cub. It's usually something else  . I was meeting Mr Cubman just around the corner at Pitstop motorcycles at 9.30 am. We had a quick chat with Tony the owner who was lamenting the state of the industry in general and his business in particular. He was moaning about tyre kickers and time wasters etc ........er that'll be us then, he wasn't too happy    we wished him a happy new year and left removing the sharp cutlery and the odd length of rope we could see lying around, you know just in case
Mr Cubman was keeping up the tradition of Cub runs by turning up on a completely different bike, a CD185, nice bike by the way. The main meeting point was Rivinton bottom barn, I did wonder if anyone else was going to be daft enough to turn up. We made our way through Leigh and up onto the A6 towards Chorley. At this point the heavens opened up and we were riding in the teeth of a gale being lashed by the rain. We carried on along the A6, past the Reebok stadium down to our right, another mile or so further on we took a right and dropped into Horwich a quick left right and along the country lane to Rivington Barn. Hooray Horobags had arrived just a minute before us. A brew was in the offing so we made our way into the barn for a cuppa, dripping water all over the floor. As we sat down we looked through the window, sheet rain . Good grief someone else has turned up :o Bramble123. He didn't look that wet? Turns out he only lives just down the road. It's the first time he's met us lot and he actually seems sane : what's that all about? We ask him about his Cub, what year is it is it 6v or 12v etc. It turns out he recently paid £20.00 for it  . I immediately went right off him, £20.00 indeed. As it turns out he's turned up on a Honda VFR750 Grrrr   . Finally Russ turns up, soaked to the skin, literally. Er Russ stop moaning about the rain and explain to me why you haven't put the wet weather gear that I know you own. It wasn't raining when I started off. I give up .
With the weather being so bad I did wonder if any of the other lads were up for the ride out to Settle, fourty odd miles away. They all said they were to a man :o Oh b****ks that means we'll have to go then  . I led taking us over 'Winter Hill' towards and into Belmont to the Black Dog pub where we take a left onto the A675 towards the M65 Motorway. Up the hills Horobags is struggling to keep up, strange that as he's not that overweight   . We arrive at the roundabout by the Motorway cross over and carry on along the A675 till we meet the A6061 towards the village of Hoghton. Everyone is keeping up, just, Brambles struggling a bit on the VFR  . We turn right at the post office and take the back lanes ( yes it's still raining) up to the main lights on the A677/A59. It's the A59 we need past the BAE Aerospace factory and heading for Clitheroe. There's quite a bit of traffic on the road. We stop at a set of lights and Horobags aint happy with the Cubs performance. 'It's struggling up the hills I think the clutch may be slipping'. I remarked that it did seem a bit slow compared to mine and Russ's  .
Just before we hit the dual carriageway Russ comes flying past :o RACE . We slow down after a short distance and the Horobags comes flying past, RACE. Me and Russ haul him in and pass him. Old Horo isn't happy :x . I was still leading as we approach Clitheroe. Horobags musters all the power from his Cub and pulls along side (45mph). He point to his groin :o and, I may be wrong here but he shouts 'I WANT A KISS' still pointing to his man region :o :o  I know we are mates and all that but well you know there are limits   . He overtakes and pulls it a petrol station a couple of miles up the road and nips to the toilet for a p***. Phew thank God for that    . Russ by now is doubly soaked and is the point of turning around and going home. I threaten, sorry, persuade him to carry on. How far is it he asks? about 12miles, you said that 20 miles ago. I know Russ, I lied then but I'm telling the truth now  . He didn't believe me until we were back on our way and I pointed to the sign post 'Settle 12miles'. Oh did I mention it was raining  . Out of Gisburn to Settle should have been a pleasant ride but we got stuck behind an Eddie Stobbart bloody truck. As soon as we got to Settle, literally, we swung our legs off the bikes and the rain stopped.
Reprobates at Settle
Everyone was a bit cold so we made our way to the best Chippie in the world and sat down for Fish, chips and peas or curry or gravy or........etc etc.
Bramble and Cubman await the snappin
Russ falls asleep from hypothermia
Bloody VFR, ever likely he's hanging his head in shame
Nice CD185
At least there were some Cubs that made it
I've taken up drawing dunno what you think of this effort of Bramble and Horo in the café It's just a photo really
Thankfully, apart from Russ, we were mainly dry. The best biking kit I have ever bought are the Camo Gortex over mittens, brilliant. We have a good chat and come to the conclusion that between them Horobags and Cubman have owned every bike ever produced. It's about 1.45 and time to head for home. Horobags asks me if we can swap bikes for a while to see what I think of his lack of performance and if I think the clutch is slipping. I had to come clean and explain to him that both mine and Russ's bikes were Lifan 110's. I couldn't tell wheter he was happy or angry  . We swapped any way. There was nowt wrong with his bike in fact it was nice to ride and didn't lack at all in power, speed or torque. When we got back to Gisburn we swapped back and he was surprised how smooth the engine and gearbox were on the Lifan. Watch this space methinks? We went back the same way we had come, Horobags peeled off at one of the roundabouts heading for Langho over the tops to Manchester, Russ peeled off heading for Ribchester and onto Preston, Bramble whizzed past us on the VFR  so it was left to me and Cubman in the now glorious sunshine to get back to the A675 head down to the M6 and home.
You know what It was a great ride out despite the weather I hope the others felt the same.
