I went all the way to Sainsbury's today.

Preparation for such an arduous journey began as early as just after breakfast (or at least ofter a 10 minute rest to digest my croissant and coffee).

Then began preparations in earnest, I checked the tyre pressures and the oil level - even added a few ml just to be perfectly on the mark. I packed the extra chain and lock and wheeled the Munterbike out of the garage.

Casting a weather eye to the skies and throwing caution to the wind I eschewed the use of waterproofs and clad in just a heavy flying jacket and winter gloves I thumbed the starter button. As ever the old nail started at the first attempt and sat idling whilst I added the Mr Frosty cool bag to the top box.

Clicking down the visor and clicking down into first we accelerated away from the old homestead; with the motor still cold there was a little hiccup before the motor started pulling strongly. Into second gear and the acceleration builds 20,,,,25 and we go for third. All too soon we reach the end of the close and work down the gearbox. Looking right and seeing an aged Vauxhall at a distance that was a 50/50 decision between pulling out or waiting - I decide to go for it and almost ran into the back of a parked Tesco delivery lorry - the adage is true; most accidents happen on roads your over-familiar with.

The rest of the outbound journey is without incident, the little Honda performing traffic splitting duties with the ease of a vehicle refined over many years and the design genius the worlds foremost motorcycle designer. Temporary traffic lights and long lines of static cars cause no delay and soon we are pulling into the supermarket car park.

With the helmet secured to the seat with a cable lock passed through the rear wheel and the heavy chain and padlock securing the front wheel to the steel support beam of the upper parking level - it was time to do battle with the great unwashed masses to secure supplies.

I shall gloss over the details of the shopping process as it has no interest for the readers here, needless to say I returned to the little Honda with a bulging bag of frozen croissant, French style ground coffee and a bag of cheap carrots.

I had some trouble removing the heavy padlock until I realised it was the wrong key, but with the top box loaded we headed for home. The heavy load did not tax the sturdy wee bike and once again we cut through the traffic queues with ease.

All too soon we were home once more; a mix of elation at being home tinged with the sadness of no longer being on the open road tugged at my heart strings. With the frozen breakfast goodness secured in the homesteads freezer I returned the bike to it's storage position in the garage and gave it a celebratory pat on the saddle - it had done well.

Another adventure over; I wonder what tomorrow will bring?
