well, Sev wins, twas rubber mounted on the back of the speedo module.
prised it apart, the components were good, so a quick scrape of the contacts with a scalpel and it's working fine.
The problem with the cowling was a homebrew mirror extension holding the cowling in place.
Just needs a good clean and it'll be going up for sale
