I ran an old Beetle on a petrol / diesel mix I siphoned out of a mate's van.. Pre-ignition was horrendous.. I had to retard the ignition timing loads to let it run without harming it.. Collected lots of queues going up hills for a few days. Slowly put the ignition back to normal as I diluted it. I wouldn't try it in a modern engine-management car as I think it would be outside the parameters of the system's range of adjustment.
Octane rating measurement is done in laboratories with variable compression engines.. No way of doing it yourself.
