hi, it seems to have turned into a sad week but i had some good news on wednesday to do with my late dad. the powers that be have decided to honour those brave chaps of bomber command and those sailors who took part in the russian convoys. my dad was in the royal navy and was serving on an anti aircraft boat which before the war was a fruit ship but because the idea of dive bombers like the stukka was quite new at the time and there were no purpose built ships as such to deal with them. i,m not sure how many he took part in as he died when i was 4 so i never really knew him. what i do know is that he took part in the worst convoys, pq 17 it was named and since has been dubbed " the convoy to hell" . out of 35 ships laden with tanks, lorries aircraft etc only 11 made it. the story of pq 17 is really interesting even in the condensed wikapedia form. many of the crews were told to write there last letters on hearing news that a fleet of german battle ships were on there way to intercept them inc the turpitz which was the bizmarks sister ship which as you know sank the "hood", biggest battle ship in the royal navy from near 15 miles. many of the ships were picked off while been stuck in the artic pack ice by u boats and planes, must have been very scary. it was very important to keep russia armed because once hitler had deafeated the russians, the german armies would have returned and fought the western allies , it would have been even more grim. anyway, i,m applying on behalf of him for one of the medals there offering, its called an " artic star" and looks very nice too. :)
