Hi Matt and welcome to the board. The stamped VIN you have indicates your 90 does indeed have a somewhat chequered history.

I can speak with some authority on this, as in the past my work involved inspection, investigation and where appropriate the VIN stamping of literally hundreds of vehicles along with Q plating (almost legalised ringing ). The system has more recently changed and these VIN's are rarely issued and the indeterminate vehicles are subsequently destroyed etc. This, I have to say I do agree with in many but not all circumstances.

The top & bottom of it is that your 90 has more than likely been stolen & recovered in the past and had its VIN erased or tampered with. It will have been examined and probably have even identified, but rather than re-stamp with the manufacturers issued VIN which would raise suspicion as it will not be possible to properly replicate its features a DVLA issued VIN will be stamped in a suitable location. The SABTVRO indicates it was issued by a UK Vehicle Registation Office the following 3 digits indicate which local office dealt & issued it, the remainder being a sequential unique identifier. The idea being that any future questions about the vehicles authenticity/history can be traced back if necessary.

At the end of the day, nothing whatsoever to be concerned about as its all been dealt with, but it can cause constenation at the roadside to the un-educated bobby's eye and it must also reduce its value IMO.

Hope this helps

Ady
