schoolboy error... my problem was indeed the chain. i had removed it, cleaned and lubed it, inspected it (off the bike) and found all links to move freely so dismissed it as being the cause of the problem.
if i'd have looked closer with the chain fitted to the bike, i would have noticed the very slight tight spot which was the cause.
having fitted a new chain the problem has gone. so very many thanks to all who responded. lesson learnt - trust those who know best!
