There were two types of dry battery unit - one had to be switched between the dynohub and the batteries manually using the switch on the front light. The other type featured a bridge rectifier and switched the lights automatically when the hub voltage dropped below a set level (this was known as the filter switch unit).
The posh automatic one tended to be fitted to the Superb bicycles so it could be the one you've got but checking the diagrams should clear things up.
