Towards/away or left/right is too ambiguous.. They could mean either way depending how you interpret the words.

Anticlockwise to undo looking at the bolt head (worm's eye view).

Which means clockwise looking down for the top of the bike (bird's eye view).

So if the spanner's sticking out to the right of the bike, beneath the exhaust you move it towards the back of the bike to loosen.
