As Boo says there are safe so long as you don't come off.Here is an extract from an article in this months Classic Bike Mag written by a 1960 Continental Circus rider,Ollie Howe,who always wore a Bell Jet style,as did I in those days:-

"I never wore a pudding basin because they killed more people than they saved.They had a hard band round the rim,and thats what damaged the head""a rider fell infront of me,banged his headin a simple fall and died.I remember at Wunstorf in Germanya Dutch guy came off,banged his head,got up and staggered off the circuit,but died of head injuries afterwards""Given the dangers of the circuits,riders had to crash less in order to stay alive.I reckon to fall off about three times a year."
