17.5.12. It’s the scene
I went for a ride with the local Scooter club last Sunday. About 6 of us met at Munches cafe at Bamber Bridge. They were middle aged dressed in Doc Martins, Parkas, or olive green Bomber Jackets with badges etc. & rode Vespas & Lambrettas. They were a nice bunch & made me welcome. I asked one of them why they still rode these machines he said “It’s the whole scene, the smell, the noise & the music”.

We rode from Preston to 45 miles to Helsby where I was surprised to meet about 200 other riders from the Lancashire Scooter Alliance. It was well organised, Marshals were dispatched to direct us at the junctions & we all went on the main ride which was to Parkgate on the Wirral. They didn’t seem to mind me even though I was the only one on a step though, when in fact I would say that 99% of the bikes were Vespas & Lambrettas.

We always hire a “twist -and-go” when on holidays to the Greek Islands. I find them the easier to ride with a passenger than a motorbike. But until now have never seen the attraction of Vespas & Lambrettas. They have gears which are operated from the handlebars & a foot brake which sticks up through the floor which needs great skill to operate safely. But I enjoyed the ride & the company so you never know there may be room for one in the garage, next to my Suzuki Address of course.
