I was in Beckenham during the war, just two miles down the road from your parents, CeeGee. I well remember seeing V1s coming over, sometimes two in the sky at once. Other than listening for the engine to stop, we kids took relatively little notice of them. Once the engine cut out, they carried on flying for about 15 seconds until they landed and exploded. So as long as they were still motoring, you were safe. The V2s were a different matter; they could arrive unannounced at any time with absolutely no warning. But there were far fewer of them than the V1s, and were never the ultimate weapon that Hitler intended.
