Fine wire wool sprayed with WD40 or such like will get the rust off without scratching. Anything you put on the exhaust to protect it, will just get burnt off.
I've found the non genuine exhausts to be very poor quality and rust very easily. A genuine one from a Honda dealer is expensive, but I've had mine on for about 11yrs now, and it's still in good condition. Yer pays yer money and takes yer choice.
If you are using it for commuting, I'd be taking the odd nut and bolt off now and again until you have done them all and grease the threads up. It'll save a world of pain later on.
