...we have Scruff, a modified 1982 Honda C70 ridden by Neil (aka Nutter.
As Jammy James says; The battle will commence at 9.00 am at the pumps of the Severn View services, Junction 1, M48. After filling the bikes with fuel, we will depart together and ride as quickly as we can to junction 30 of the M4, some 27 miles away, here we shall turn and ride as quickly as we can back to the start. Upon arriving back at the Severn View services the bikes shall be refuelled and a receipt obtained to show how much fuel was used. The winner of the speed challenge shall then show good sportsmanship and buy his opponent a cup of overpriced coffee, over which, fuel consumption results shall be discussed, compared, and the winner declared.
This should be a close run competition with regard to speed, as the book top speed for the Address is 65mph and that’s about the same as Scruff despite it’s extra 17cc. Scruff is currently geared for 64mph, which is ideal when carrying Cheri and our luggage, but I’ll change that to 67mph for Saturday.
In advance (and in the event of losing the speed contest) I defend Scruffs relatively poor performance by pointing out the large top-box (full of spares and tools), generally poor aerodynamics, Heinz 57 engine built from Chinese components, Heinz 57 carburettor built from Chinese components, an inlet tract consisting of the original C70 air filter, a car radiator hose and a very sharp right angled Chinese inlet manifold (required for the longer engine and to keep the larger carb under the leg shields and connected to original filter), and finally, no dyno or any other form of gauge was used in the tuning of Scruff. Of course, in the event of Scruff winning the speed contest, all the afore mentioned, will then be given as the reasons for Scruffs outstanding performance.
If anyone wants to join us for the ride, then please do, it goes without saying that you will need to bring some pretty fast bikes if you hope to keep up with Jammy James and I
