Salty's evaporation cooler or camping fridge consists of:

One water reservoir/container like a plastic takeaway tub, ice cream tub, small plastic washing up bowl, plastic pint glass or other such item and one or two old tea towels.

How to use it:
Fill water reservoir/container with cold water, soak the old tea towels with cold water. Place a part of the old tea towels in the water reservoir/container making sure they reach the bottom of the container. Place items to be cooled (beer, food) next to the water container and cover the beer or food with the damp tea towels. Make sure to press the towels to the surface of the beer or food so the towels touch as much as possible the surface of them. Keep the camping fridge and what it cools out of the direct sun and expose the damp towels covering the beer or food to air flow to allow the water in the towels to evaporate, so not stuffed under a hot fly sheet with no ventilation. If anything is likely to be damaged by being in contact with wet towels (egg boxes can go soggy and fall to bits) put them in a carrier bag or plastic container to keep them dry.

How it works:
The damp towels covering the beer or food are continually being dried out by the residual heat in the beer or food items being used up to evaporate the water in the fabric of the towels. The towels act like a wick drawing up more water from the reservoir/container to replace that evaporated keeping the beer and food cool. It is important to make sure that the towels in the water reservoir/conatiner reach the bottom of the conainter. If they are only half way in, when the water level drops below the level of the towel this then dries out and the device stops working. Keep an eye on the water level in the container and top up as required. More water will be used up on hot sunny days than cool cloudy ones.

Packing up:
Empty water from container and dry it. Wring out towels and hang to dry if poss before packing away as it stops them stinking the house out when you get home and unpack.

Happy camping and have a good trip.
:)
