There are a few things I use. If it's just dirty I wash it with car shampoo. Usually I will spray the complete bike with a diluted solution of TFR (Traffic Film Remover) and work the very dirty/oily bits with an old 2" brush spraying extra TFR on as I go. If I am just removing oil or grease I use panel wipe/degreaser. A combination of all or some of these always does the trick. 5 ltrs of TFR will set you back about £6.00-£8.00 and lasts for ages. Panel wipes about£10.00-£14.00 for 5ltrs. Panel wipe is not aggressive like thinners so will not affect paint work.
